The seaside village of Marken in the Netherlands is picturesque, peaceful, and traditional. You’ll have to see it with your own eyes to believe how a community has lived in their wooden houses, built atop stilts and mounds as protection from floods for centuries.
Marken is without a doubt a must-see village, and is just a 35 min drive away from Amsterdam, so IT’S PERFECT! It makes visiting this peaceful fishing town, a perfect day trip when staying in Amsterdam.
When strolling through it’s streets you’ll see beautiful wooden houses, different from those you’ll have seen back in Amsterdam, fishing boats, lovely gardens, not too much people, and inviting restaurants, all of which offer delicious food, and a good relaxing atmosphere at a reasonable price.
Here’s the look of Marken!! Doesn’t it look like living in a lifelike postcard? ?
There’s about as many things that one can do when visiting Marken, none of which include extreme exhaustion, or bumping into what anyone can consider to be too many tourists. That’s the beauty of Marken.
So what can you do? what should you consider bringing along? and how should you get there?
Getting there: bike, car, bus, or ferry. Your choice entirely!
Getting to Marken is not hard, and there’s options to ensure a positive experience to as many budgets, and tastes! You can take a bike ride, and enjoy as you exercise your way to Marken (you’ll surely relax once you’re there anyway!) plus, you get to appreciate the windmills, farm animals, and cool weather on your way. Or, If you prefer to go by car or bus, the scenic views are also part of the mix, plus you get to chill on the way over. On the other hand, if you prefer to arrive by ferry, you have to consider that ferries depart from Volendam, really near from Amsterdam, too. So you can visit both the same day, and get to ride on a water vessel on your way to Marken!
Being there: eat, stroll, read, write, explore, relax!
Once in Marken you get to choose between various activities. You can first walk around town, and see their beautiful wooden houses, fishing boats, and plants. I recommend walking by because Marken is not that big, you get to see pretty much everything by foot, and get to make as many stops as you like at shops, restaurants, the church, or the Clog Museum. This village is a true delight for the eyes and soul. You get to relax, and spend some time far away from Amsterdam’s tumult.
What to bring along: sunglasses, book, euros, camera!
What gets a place in your bag may depend from person to person, but the basics may include a pair of sunglasses to beat the sun (when visiting in summertime), a book or notebook, in case your someone who likes to read or write in silent places, euros to buy some food, souvenirs, or whatever you may need (like ice cream delights ???), and your camera! For snapping those postcard views and wonderful memories!
Marken is really the place you can go to do anything you feel like doing without having to worry about reservations, tumults of people…all of that which sometimes becomes a worry when visiting larger and more popular places. It’s where you’ll find everything you need just walking distance, and where everyone you meet is kind and amicable. It’s a place to relax, and to enjoy. It’s a wonderful, worthy, and peaceful day trip from Amsterdam! ❤️
