Why Designers Love Seattle

Street art

There’s a city in the northwest of United States, in Washington State, renowned for its good coffee, mountains, its famous Space Needle, and for its incredible taste for architecture, art, and design.

If you’re a designer, an architect or simply an art enthusiast who appreciates creativity, like myself, Seattle is a city you’ll adore. Take my word.

I came to this city for the second time a year ago, eager to learn about design on a creativity course I had signed up for, and rediscovered a city that rapidly grew on me.

If you want to know why it’s an artist’s dream city, keep reading! I have a feeling you’ll love this…

1. STREET ART

Seattle is a city turned into a canvas. In almost every corner, you’ll come across sculptures, or find walls painted with figures, colors, and inspiring messages. It’s difficult to find a monotonous corner, which makes the city expressive, and fun!

2. VISITING THE GUM WALL IS AN INTERESTING EXPERIENCE

This is the living definition of peculiarly, beautiful art. You’ve probably heard about the wall of chewing gum found in this city before. Tourists from around the world visit to witness, and maybe stick a new piece of chewed gum into this collective artistic work. Find it in Post Alley, under the Pike Place market!

3. IT’S GOT ITS OWN ART MUSEUM

The SAM (Seattle Art Museum) has permanent collections, and offers temporary exhibitions that are worth visiting. Among them, you can find works of graphic and textile design, in addition to being lost in rooms and rooms of historical sculptures, and paintings.

4. ITS PUBLIC LIBRARY IS AN ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN MASTERPIECE

The library is emblematic. It surprises you from the moment you see it from the outside, but just step inside, and you will discover a literary world, perfectly organized, and designed in spaces that encourage and facilitate reading and learning.

5. IT’S NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO NOT BE BLOWN AWAY BY CHIHULY GARDEN AND GLASS

I’m talking about a museum that has indoor and outdoor spaces, and that engages its visitors with the works of blown glass, which not only give life, and beautify their spaces, but that is intricate and is simply flawless.

6. PIKE PLACE MARKET IS A WHOLE NEW WORLD

Visiting the market is a unique experience. It has several levels and distributions, stores and markets, not only of food, but of spices and curiosities as well. In it, you’ll find hidden coffeeshops and restaurants. The best part is to discover them as you are lost and wandering around.

7.  YOU’LL GET TO KNOW PEOPLE WHO LOVE THEIR JOB AS DESIGNERS AND WILL INSPIRE YOU

During my letterpress and design courses, I got to know other students and professors. Their passion towards creating and being creative is insanely contagious. Take a look at my photo during the letterpress workshop!

8. PIONEER SQUARE IS A BEAUTIFUL DISCOVERY

Pioneer Square is the heart of the city, and it’s here where you will find endless art galleries, and those workshop-shops that sell unique stationery, and inspiring details.

A city of expression…

For me, Seattle represents human expression in the face of the hustle and bustle of a busy and vibrant city. But in the same way, it’s a city that offers quiet spaces that inspire and free the mind, just minutes from the city. Visiting is an experiment and whole artistic discovery.

I really doubt it’s hygienic hahaha but there’s always the option to just walk by and see it! I’m also a Chihuly fan! His work is impressive!
